Cooler temperatures can wreak havoc on your skin. Cold weather and wind causes its moisture to evaporate and leaves it dry, chapped, flaky and itchy. Be prepared this season – start a winter skin care routine now.
Moisturize Your Skin and Lips
Apply an overnight hydrating face mask a few nights a week. Hyaluronic acid and omega oils are some good moisturizing ingredients to look for.
For chapped lips, you can use a moisturizing chapstick. At night, a lip serum with sugar in it may be more beneficial.
A thick moisturizer will hydrate your skin and form a protective barrier. Body butter is better than creams or lotions.
Other Precautions to Take
Indoor heat may not be any better. It can also dry out your skin. To help keep moisture in the air you can use a humidifier. (It will also help if your nasal passages are dried out!)
Did you know that our bodies are 70 percent water? Cold, harsh weather depletes our skin of its moisture. So staying hydrated is important. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids – especially water.
Also, when facing the outdoors you should protect your skin from the elements. Wear protective clothing like gloves, scarves, and hats.
Even on cold, cloudy and rainy days the ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause damage to your skin. Use a sunscreen every day to help prevent fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer – which are all caused by unprotected sun exposure.
